Bowl Size Guidelines

▪️What is a bowl?

Bowls are used for cooking or as tableware and vary in size and shape depending on their use.
As cooking utensils, bowls are used for kneading flour and mixing ingredients and are made of enamel, stainless steel, iron, copper, plastic, and heat-resistant glass. Some bowls come with a one-handled handle and a spout.
Bowls as tableware include salad bowls, stew bowls, and café au lait bowls, which are in the form of a teacup or rice bowl. In addition to their use as containers for food and drink, there are also finger bowls used to fill with water and wash fingertips, and colanders for draining water.

▪️ Bowl Size Guidelines

In Japan, a standard size for serving a salad for one person is about 15 cm in diameter. The most common size of salad bowls is 13-15 cm in diameter. A bowl with a diameter of 15 cm can be used for a wide variety of purposes, such as soups and cereals. For serving small amounts of fruit, a mini size of about 10 cm is also a good choice.

For large gatherings, such as family meals or parties, we recommend salad bowls with a diameter of 25 to 30 cm.

For a "main dish," a bowl with a diameter of about 23 to 27 cm is ideal for serving pasta or curry.
