Bunkichi Kiln

Bunkichi Kiln

Warmth Transmitted by Historic Modern Kutani Pottery

The Bunkichi kiln was established in the Meiji period by Azuma Bunkichi, a master Kutani potter and apprentice of the founder of ceramics, Saita Michiaki. His handmade and hand-painted vessels have been well received by many pottery enthusiasts. The simple, yet beautifully formed pieces let you feel the warmth of the hand and the breath of the craftsman. Here you will find vessels that you will want to use every day.

Distinctive manufacturing method of Bunkichi Kiln

The Bunkichi kiln manufacturing method, "Te-okoshi," is a method of shaping clay that has been stretched by hand into a board shape. Each piece of pottery has its own unique characteristics, with subtle differences appearing one at a time. The clay used in Kutani Hanasaka is mixed with tiny rough stones to give the pottery a rich flavor.
