How to Care for Kutani Ware

We would like to introduce some important care tips to ensure the longevity of your Kutani ware. These simple maintenance steps will help you preserve your cherished pieces, preventing scratches and dirt. Please take a moment to read through and follow these instructions.

Before Use...

For vessels made of pottery (earthenware), it is recommended not to use them directly. Instead, soak them in boiling water once. By allowing the vessel to absorb moisture beforehand and then drying it before use, the surface of the vessel retains its water-absorbing properties. This makes it less likely to develop stains, tea residue, odors, etc. When boiling, it's also said to be more effective to add a handful of rice along with the vessel.

Furthermore, for dishes like sashimi, it's a good practice to pre-chill them in ice water. This helps to prevent fish odors from sticking.

After use...

After use, please wash your Kutani ware as soon as possible. It's best to use a diluted neutral detergent that you can find in stores. Gently clean with a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or nylon scrubbers, as they may scratch the painted designs on the ware. While dishwasher use is possible, we recommend handwashing whenever possible, especially for items with gold or silver accents, as prolonged use in a dishwasher may cause the designs to wear off.

After washing, be sure to rinse thoroughly and allow the ware to dry completely. Drying with a dry cloth can help prevent the development of mold and odors. When wiping, press gently on the painted areas rather than rubbing them.

  • Please refrain from using products with gold or silver elements in microwave ovens or regular ovens as sparks could occur, leading to surface damage and staining.

  • Be cautious when using thin tea bowls or teacups as their surfaces can heat up quickly.

  • For products that have been bonded (ceramic and metal, glass, etc.), avoid direct exposure to open flames, microwave ovens, regular ovens, or dishwashers, as it can lead to issues with the bonding.
