How to use Japanese chopsticks

How to use Japanese chopsticks

1. How to hold the chopsticks

Hold the bottom chopstick:

First, hold the bottom chopstick with the base of your thumb and the top of your ring finger. This chopstick is fixed and generally does not move.

Hold the upper chopstick:

Hold the upper chopstick with your index finger and middle finger as if you were holding a pencil, and press lightly with your thumb. Move this top chopstick to pick up food.

2. How to move the chopsticks

Do not move the bottom chopstick:

Hold the lower chopstick still. Only the top chopstick moves.

Move the upper chopstick:

Use your index finger and middle finger to move the upper chopstick up and down, closing and opening the tip of the chopstick to grab food.

3. How to Grab Food

Grabbing food:

Open the chopsticks slightly and align the tip with the food you want to grab. Then close the chopsticks to firmly grasp the food.

Lifting food:

Once you have firmly grasped the food, lift it and bring it to your mouth. The key here is to grasp it gently without using too much force.

4. Place your chopsticks

Use a chopstick rest:

When placing your chopsticks during a meal, it is customary to place them horizontally on the chopstick rest. If there is no chopstick rest, gently gather the tips of the chopsticks and place them on the edge of the plate or table.

Do not cross your chopsticks:

Do not cross your chopsticks when placing them. This is considered bad manners.

5. Points of attention and manners

Do not stab food:

It is bad manners to stab food with chopsticks. Always pick up food with the tips of the chopsticks.

Avoid passing chopsticks:

When passing food to someone else, avoid passing it directly from chopstick to chopstick. Place it on the plate or use a serving chopstick. This is avoided because it is reminiscent of funeral rituals.

Do not wave your chopsticks:

Avoid pointing or waving them in the air. Treat chopsticks with care as a tool for eating.

By learning how to hold and use them properly, you can enjoy your meal beautifully and comfortably.
