Do You Know Japanese Whisky?

Japanese whisky has divided opinions, but it's well-recognized internationally. Some may find it "boring," but I believe there's a fascination with Japanese whisky that I hope to convey in this article.

Even if you don't live in Japan, names like Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu may ring a bell. However, due to increasing demand, these whiskies have become quite expensive, even domestically.

So, let me introduce you to "Fuji Grain Whisky," crafted by KIRIN at the Fuji Gotemba Distillery. Located near the iconic Mount Fuji, the distillery benefits from a climate that makes life comfortable and whisky delicious.

In the heart of Japan's serene landscape, I found my home for two years just a stone's throw from where KIRIN's Fuji Grain Whisky is made. There, I was embraced by the mild climate and the region's renowned pristine waters, elements that I believe lend themselves to the distinctive taste of this exceptional whisky.

Official Tasting Notes from KIRIN

Top Note: A bouquet of raspberries, orange marmalade, with the sweet aroma of pound cake and candied chestnuts.

Palate: A soft mouthfeel featuring flavors of white grapes, orange peel, and dark chocolate, complemented by spicy notes reminiscent of rye bread and cinnamon.

Finish: A gentle sweetness with a hint of aromatic wood, leaving a woody and spicy aftertaste that lingers pleasantly.

As a whisky enthusiast who has tasted varieties worldwide, I admit that my palate may not capture every nuance. KIRIN recommends enjoying this whisky in a wine glass, gradually adding water after starting straight to appreciate its full range of flavors.

Kirin Fuji Grain Whiskey and Fruit

My Personal Tasting Experience

The aroma begins with a subtle citrus tang, evolving into a fruitcake-like aroma when aired. The taste is smooth, with a balance of light acidity and robust sweetness. It's a medium-bodied whisky that reminds me of bourbon.

The Water Addition Test

Adding water seemed to unlock the fragrance, leading to a milder aroma. The sweetness became more pronounced, making it accessible to those who normally don't drink whisky.

The bottle's label and silhouette are exquisitely designed. The simple yet beautiful label prominently displays the character for "Fuji," while the bottom silhouette reflects the amber hue of the whisky, resembling Mount Fuji—a luxurious gift that offers visual delight as well as taste.

Known for its delicate flavors and rich heritage, Japanese whisky is celebrated around the world. While sought-after labels such as Yamazaki, Hibiki, and Hakushu can be hard to obtain, KIRIN's Fuji Grain Whisky stands as a remarkable alternative. Produced at the foot of Mt. Fuji, with its pristine water and mild climate, this whisky not only captivates with its appearance but also embodies the true beauty of Japan in its taste. Whether as a gift or a treat for yourself, this whisky promises a special experience with every pour."
