The beauty of silver and white: Contemporary Creative Kutani Ware "Yuriginsai"

Yuriginsai" has become one of the most representative techniques of Kutani ware. Soshugama has been engaged in glaze research for more than ten years and has succeeded in developing its own high-temperature firing glaze. The silver luster, glass-like texture and fantastic colors of the Japanese modern style are born from this famous kiln.

Yuriginsai technique

The technique is to paste a pattern made of silver foil on a vessel, apply transparent or colored glaze on top of it, and fire it. Unlike gold, which has a powerful shine and a strong presence as the star of the show, silver has a subdued shine that exudes a profound beauty. Because it is not strongly assertive, it blends beautifully with colored glazes, creating a refined beauty. Normally, silver oxidizes and turns black, but Yuriginsai has the advantage of preventing oxidation by covering it with glaze, allowing the beautiful silver foil to be enjoyed for a long time. Yuriginsai is a technique established by I. Nakata.
