Kutaniyaki is characterized by a painting technique in which lines are drawn in an indigo blue called gosu and painted with a thick layer of five colors (red, yellow, green, purple and navy blue) called gosai (five colors).
The bold overglaze painting gives a strong impression.
Colored Gold Foil
Colored gold leaf, often found in traditional Japanese crafts, is gold leaf that has been dyed. This leaf is incredibly thin, ranging in thickness from about one ten-thousandth to two-thousandths of a millimeter, and its production process requires advanced skills and meticulous handwork.
The majority of Japan's gold leaf production, known as Kanazawa gold leaf, is due to the climate of Kanazawa being conducive to gold leaf production, allowing these traditional techniques to be preserved and carried on into modern times.
